ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management
In 2012, an official review of the leading standard for quality management systems, DIN EN ISO 9001: 2008, was conducted worldwide. The result is a new version of ISO 9001.

The new version of DIN EN ISO 9001: 2015 was published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on September 23, 2015.   A transitional period of three years applies worldwide.  Within this period, quality management systems must be upgraded to the new revision.  Certificates according to ISO 9001: 2008 will be valid until September 14, 2018.

The standards revision of ISO 9001: 2015 contains structural and substantive changes.

The structure of ISO 9001: 2008 consists of eight principles of quality management:
1. 1.Customer-orientedness
2. 2.Management responsibility
3. 3.Involvement of the relevant persons
4. 4.Process-oriented approach
5. 5.System-oriented management approach
6. 6.Continuous improvement
7. 7.Relevant decision-making approach
8. 8.Supplier relationships for mutual benefit

The structure of ISO 9001:2015 is based on the abovementioned basic structure for management system standards (High Level Structure) and has been extended by two chapters.

The new version facilitates the implementation of a process-oriented approach and is more practice-oriented:
the focus is increasingly on the systematic handling of risks and opportunities that influence the achievement of the processes (risk management) and the environment of the organization.  Furthermore, management is more closely involved in the quality management process and is responsible for the effectiveness and performance of the quality management system.
Since documentations are nowadays often computer- or web-based, no printed QM manual is required.   Also, documents and records are no longer differentiated, but summarized as documented information.

Why revision?
Standards are adapted to today’s company realities and are periodically checked to see if they meet the requirements of the users. The new standard grants companies flexibility in the implementation of their quality management system in many areas and provides a path to a practice-oriented management system:
existing structures can be questioned and be further developed.
